Alphonse ALLAIS (1854-1905). 2 autograph manuscripts, 1st signed, [1887-1888]; 4 and 2pages in-8. Two tales for Le Chat Noir.Pour se donner une contenance. Tale published in Le Chat Noir on December 10, 1887 (reprinted in Le Journal under the title Un garçon timide, and collected in 1897 in Le Bec en l'air, under the title Un garçon timide ou Pour se donner une contenance). "Like everyone else, I have a few corpses on my conscience, quite a few in fact, and when I think of them, a little shiver runs down my spine, and lividity invades my sympathetic physiognomy. Women, especially"... The failed marriage. Collected, with modifications, under the title Le bizarre correspondant, in Rose et Vert-Pomme (1894). This tale features Sapeck being approached by a schoolboy who asks him to accompany him back to school, pretending to be his uncle...This is the original version, published in Le Chat Noir on May 5, 1888, where it was followed by another tale (not shown here), reprinted under the title Simple vaudeville in Rose et Vert-Pomme.
