HISPANO-NEAPOLITAIN, deuxième moitié du XVIIe siècle Polychrome painted carved wood reliquary bust representing Saint Placide resting on a hexagonal carved wood base with the inscription on the front "Sito/PLAC TO" H: 61.5 cm (24¼ in.) Paint missing and damaged The elaborate painting style of this reliquary head is comparable to the production of Neapolitan workshops when Naples was under Spanish rule. Its painting style, frontal composition and facial type are closely reminiscent of the full-length figure of San Francesco Saverio (Cagliari, Exma, Estofado de Oro: La statuaria lignea nella Sardegna spagnola, Dec. 16, 2001 - Jan. 27, 2002, no. 75) carved in Naples in the second half of the 17th century.
