Paul DELAROCHE (Paris 1797-1856)
Two heads of Camaldolese monks (domVincenzo Frilli and dom Romualdo Giani) Pair of canvases 17 x 12.5 cm The monks' heads illustrate the artist's first trip to Italy. In 1834 and 1835, Delaroche stayed at the Camaldolese monastery in Tuscany to prepare for the commission to paint the Madeleine church in Paris. Our two monks' heads are based on those exhibited at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes (see the catalog of the exhibition Paul Delaroche. Un peintre dans l'Histoire, Nantes, Musée des Beaux-Arts and Montpellier, Pavillon du Musée Fabre, 1999 and 2000, nos. 26 and 27, reproduced in color on p. 72).
