Description
Large domed polychrome painted enamel plaque depicting the Stigmatization of Saint Francis of Assisi after the engraving by Agostino Carracci (1586) (fig.). On the summit of the Alverne mountain, the Franciscan stands with his arms raised, his left knee resting on a rock, receiving the stigmata from a seraph appearing in the sky; in front of him, a book and a skull are placed on a parchment on which we can read Ego enim stigmata domini nri: Jesus Christi in corpore meo porta (For I bear the marks of the Lord Jesus Christ in my body) surmounted by the inscription S.FRANCOIS DASISE; in the background, Brother Léon seated, dozing in his reading. Semi-flower border with foliage at the corners. Dark purplish counter-glaze signed Bapte nouailher / à Limoges.
