Huamanga stone lion carved in the round with polychrome highlights. Lying down, it turns its head to the right, its mouth open to show its tongue and fangs, its eyebrows furrowed and its eyes very prominent. Hispanic colonies of South America, Peru, Ayacucho, 17th century H. 13 cm - L. 19 cm Traces of inscription on the underside (minor accidents). Of volcanic origin, Huamanga stone, also known as Andean alabaster, owes its name to the ancient city of Ayacucho in northern Peru. The Jesuit missions, established in the region since 1580, made Huamanga an important arts and crafts center in the 17th and 18th centuries.
