Silver ring and amulet with mounted otolith. Spain, 18th century L. 2.5 cm - Gross weight: 7.1 g H. (with setting) 3.5 cm (small deformations) Formed of small calcium carbonate crystals, otoliths are small concretions found in the inner ear of certain fish. Since ancient times, they have been thought to have protective or prophylactic properties, notably against marine disasters and headaches. Oxford's Pitt Rivers Museum holds several pendant amulets in silver frames.
