Painted beechwood Wismutkästchen wedding box decorated with a couple in black and red Renaissance costume surmounting a heart and two intertwined hands, mani in fede, surrounded by cut flowers, foliage, berries and leather; similar stylized floral motifs on all four sides. Iron and brass hinges, angle irons and lock escutcheon; key. Alpine countries, early 17th century H. 13.7 cm - W. 30.5 cm - D. 22 cm (good condition, minor restorations including reworked keyhole) The painting technique used here is bismuth paint, particularly popular for popular works. A layer of bismuth powder dissolved in a water-based glue was applied to a chalk base to give a bright metallic background and vivid colors.
