Description
High-relief alabaster plaque with gold highlights depicting the Throne of Grace, i.e. the Holy Trinity with God the Son in Christ supported by God the Father, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove resting on the latter's shoulder. Radiant background animated by cherubs bearing the Instruments of the Passion (cross, whip, rods and Flagellation column). Mons, entourage of Jacques du Brœucq (1505-1584), second half of the 16th century H. 36.5 cm - L. 28.7 cm. (small accidents, missing parts and wear) The source of the composition appears to be Dürer's 1511 engraving of the Holy Trinity, albeit reinterpreted (fig. a). The theme of the Throne of Grace has been a recurrent theme among Flemish artists since the 15th century, and a version attributed to Dubroeucq comparable to this one, but in a freer style, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv.
