Description

Two important groups from a single altarpiece in polychromed limewood, carved in appliqué, depicting Christ in the Garden of Olives, with sunken backs. The group on the right shows Jesus, with a sorrowful expression, kneeling, hands clasped, head raised to heaven, with a sleeping St. Peter leaning against a tree trunk below; the group on the left depicts St. John with childlike features and St. James, both dozing, and in the background, Judas holding the bag of thirty denarii, accompanied by a soldier crossing the garden fence. Alsace, first third of the 16th century H. 69 cm - W. 47 cm - D. 21 cm and H. 60 cm - W. 44 cm - D. 20 cm (a few accidents and restorations) Provenance : - Former Claer collection, Mulhouse (labels on the backs of the two groups)
