Lying Christ in carved, polychromed and gilded wood, probably from a large Lamentation over the Dead Christ, Compianto sul Cristo morto. Jesus is stretched out, his head framed by his long, wavy hair, slightly tilted towards his right shoulder, his face with closed eyes and half-open mouth, his arms crossed in front of him, his legs parallel, his body marked by the Passion. Northern Italy, Lombardy or Piedmont, 15th century L. 124 cm (small accidents and missing pieces) In Lombardy and Piedmont, groups, sometimes life-size, depicting the Lamentation over the Dead Christ are found, featuring numerous figures around the body of the reclining Savior. Examples include the one at the Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso near Locarno, at Gropello Cairoli in the province of Pavia (fig. a) and at Vigevano in the same region (fig. b). Works consulted : - R.
