Mary as Virgin of the Temple, Tempeljungfrau, carved, polychromed and gilded wood. Of long, lanky build, the Virgin stands with hands clasped in prayer; childlike face with large, rounded forehead and full cheeks, framed by long hair with wavy locks flowing down to the lower back; she is dressed in a belted robe falling to the ground, emphasized by deep, parallel pleats on the front, broken and schematic on the mound, the pointed end of her left shoe visible. Tyrol, circa 1430/40 H. 48 cm (polychrome retouching) The theme of the young Mary in the Temple was particularly popular in German-speaking regions during the Gothic period. Borrowed from the apocryphal Gospels, it was popularized in the Middle Ages by the Golden Legend. It provides an opportunity to paint a charming portrait of a young girl as a symbol of purity.
