Description

Silver chalice, repoussé, engraved, chased and gilded, inset with two champlevé and enameled shields, black and red enamel. Cylindrical stem with ribbed median knot between two rings inscribed ihesus xps / agnus dei [foliage], flared bowl, eight-sided circular base, two of which bear an armorial shield, one of Salzburg Mi-parti, au 1 : Or, a lion rampant sable lampassed and armed gules; on 2: gules, a fess argent, the other of Archbishop Johann II von Reisberg (1429 - † 1441) Or, a bend sable. Austria, Principality of Salzburg, first half of the 15th century H. 19.2 cm - Gross weight: 365.1 g Number 368 stamped on the foot rim. (missing enamels, later bowl) This chalice appears to be a reassembly with a ribbed knot of an earlier style at the foot edged with a fine frieze of crosses. The Salzburg coat of arms and those of the archbishop were probably set as part of a gift to the prelate, unless he ordered the chalice himself and asked a silversmith to add his coat of arms. Johann II von Reisberg came from a noble Styrian family and was Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg from 1429 to 1441. After studying at the University of Vienna, he was appointed vicar-general of the archdiocese of the principality's city, before becoming dean of the cathedral in 1405. The same coat of arms as on the chalice can be found on the "golden stained glass window" of the St. Leonard church in Tamsweg (1433), which he commissioned (fig.).
