Description

High-relief carved oak jamb, part of a pan-de-bois, depicting a madman. The figure has a grotesque face and is dressed in a bonnet, belted tunic and shoes. 15th/16th century H. 76 cm - L. 23.3 cm (accidents and missing pieces, reattachments notably to the chin) More the work of "petite cognée" carpenters than imagiers, decorations for half-timbered or panelled houses hold a special place in late medieval sculpture.
