Description

Set of four framing plates, probably from a large shrine, in champlevé copper, enameled, engraved and gilded, enamels, blue, turquoise, red, white, light blue, yellow and green. Decorated with a race of rinceaux with small leaves, head to tail. Mosan, circa 1180/1200 L. 21.9 cm - 21.8 cm - 14.9 cm - 11.4 cm (some missing glazes and repairs) Friezes decorated with alternating foliage are a recurrent decorative theme in Mosan goldsmith's art, used in various techniques such as repoussé metalwork and brown varnish, but also in champlevé enamel. Similar baguettes can be seen on one of the four gables, reputed to come from the shrine of Saint Servais in the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels, more precisely on the gable-reliquary of Saint Valentine (inv.1038, fig.). G9, p. 244-248 - F. van Noten, The Treasure Room - Masterpieces of Romanesque and Mosan Art, Turnhout, 1999, cat. 11, p. 44-49
