Admiral Courbet, followed by officers and sailors, receives the Tonkinese surrender in December 1883; the actors are listed and indexed in two cartouches. Original gilded wood frame, very kitsch. Mission to Indochina by Rear-Admiral Courbet, who campaigned in Tonkin from 1883 to 1884, defeating the Black Flags. This plate stimulated the enthusiasm of the metropolitan population, and is highly representative of the Ferry government's colonial pedagogy.
