Description

François GERARD, known as BARON GERARD and ATELIER Portrait of Frederick William III, King of Prussia (1770-1840) Original canvas (Chatriot) 32.9x24.8cm Reprise du ricordo du Baron Gerard conserved at the Musée national du château de Versailles et du Trianon (canvas, 32x23cm. See the catalog des peintures du musée national du château de Versailles Paris, 1995, n°2122). The full-length portrait painted by Gerard in 1815 (canvas, 215x130.5cm), which served as the model for the ricordo, was in the collections of the Royal Palace in Berlin until 1945. It was destroyed in 1945 along with the rest of the furniture. Frederick William III was fifth King of Prussia. He reigned during the first half of the 19th century. He married Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, a princess whose beauty was known throughout Europe. An ally of Tsar Alexander I of Russia, he was a sworn enemy of Napoleon I, against whom he fought many battles, including Jena. We would like to thank Mr. Alain Latreille for sharing his opinion with us: "All these ricordi were produced in the painter's studio under his supervision and sometimes retouched, and are comparable with the set kept at the Château de Versailles, purchased by King Louis-Philippe's civil list at the sale after the painter's death in 1837".
