A famous work on the question of grace, which caused quite a stir when it first appeared. This book marks the beginning of the quarrel between Fénelon and Bossuet over quietism. Bossuet, after a bitter struggle, emerged victorious, and Fénelon's work was condemned. This brought disgrace to the Archbishop of Cambrai, who lost his title of preceptor to the children of France.
