19th Cent. Tibetan gilded 'Vajrapani' sculpture TIBET - 19° EEUW ormolu sculpture of 'Vajrapani' (also called "Jambhala" or "Kubera"), the king of the Yakshas (nature spirits), and the god of wealth - height : 22 cm He is a "Lokpala": one of the guardians of the 4 directions (i.e. north). Seated in lalitasana on a lotus flower, he holds in his right hand a lemon ("jambhara", hence his Tibetan name: "Jambhala", being the wealth-giving form of Avalokiteshvara, typified by the distinctive bodhisattva crown on his head) and in his left hand a mongoose spitting out gems. around his neck hang jewels and a shawl winds around his shoulders
