Two Kalighat paintings featuring Durga, North India, West Bengal, late 19th - early 20th century Watercolors on paper depicting the goddess of war Durga riding a lion that is trampling an elephant's head on one, and killing a demon on the second. 42.2 x 29.2 cm; 42.1 x 29.2 cm Slight stains and wetness. Kalighat is the name of a suburb in southern Calcutta where a temple dedicated to Kali is located. Paintings of this kind were made as souvenirs for the pilgrims who visited the temple.
