Sudama discovers the palace offered by Krishna, scene from the Bhagavata Purana, North India, Pahari school, probably Kangra, 19th century Gouache and gold on paper depicting the poorly-dressed Brahmin Sudama discovering the beautiful palace offered by his friend Krishna. His richly-dressed wife is waiting for him on the doorstep and an escort of courtiers on foot, on elephants or holding their mounts in their hands is there to welcome him. Painting size: 19 x 25.1 cm Page size: 23.5 x 29.5 cm Some polychromy and folds. This interesting scene is an illustration of the story of Krishna and Sudama in the Bhagavata Purana. It shows the beautiful proof of friendship shown by the god Krishna for his childhood friend Sudama, who until then had known only a miserable life of great deprivation. The same scene is depicted in a late 18th-century Pahari painting in the Victoria and Albert Museum (IS,548-1952).
