Description

Shirîn at the bath, Iran qâjâr, Tehran, circa 1880 Siliceous ceramic facing tile with polychrome molded and painted decoration under a transparent glaze. Depicting Shirîn in a roundel, surprised by Prince Khosrow. 33 x 33 cm Upper right corner broken and reglued, small lack. This famous scene from Persian literature comes from the poem Khosrow and Shirîn from Nezâmî's Khamseh. It inspired many tile makers of the Qâjâr period. A very similar tile in the Louvre Museum (UCAD 32499) is attributed to Teheran workshops circa 1870-80. A Qajar Moulded Tile depicting the bath of Shirin, Qajar Iran, Tehran, c. 1880
