The battle of Iskandar against the army of Zanzibar, folio from the Iskandar-Nameh, Iran, 19th century Manuscript paper folio with four lines of text in Persian nasta'liq in black ink, arranged in four columns on either side of an imposing gouache and gold illustration. The painting, later than the text, depicts a battlefield centered on four horsemen facing each other in pairs, dismembered bodies lying on the ground, spectators observing the scene from behind hills.
