Bahrâm en trône, folio from a manuscript of Nezâmî's Haft Peykar, Iran, Safavid style, 19th century Manuscript paper folio in Persian nasta'liq in black ink, the text divided into four columns and illustrated with an imposing gouache and gold painting depicting the Sassanid ruler Bahrâm V on an elaborate throne surrounded by courtiers, pieces of crockery in the foreground. The text frame surmounted by a black and mauve dome with gilded pinnacle. Folio mounted as an album page with a later floral margin on a blue background. Size of folio: 23 x 15 cm; size of painting: 16 x 9.5 cm Laminated folio, folds, small stains, a few polychromatic breaks, repaints (notably on faces and floor). The text on this folio is taken from the nineteenth chapter of Nezâmî's Haft Paykar or Book of Seven Beauties, in which the Sassanid king Bahram V succeeds his father to the throne, as shown in the illustration.
