[GEOGRAPHIC MAP] ORTELIUS Abraham, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Antwerp, 16th century Color-enhanced engravings on an in-folio double sheet of paper, printed on the reverse on one page with a Latin text describing the three regions represented on the maps, namely Anatolia, Egypt and present-day Tunisia. Each map titled and captioned in Latin. 45.7 x 56 cm Some stains, foxing and folds. Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theater of the Globe Terrestrial) can be considered the first modern geographical atlas. It is the fruit of many years of work and research by its Brabant author Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598), who dedicated his first edition of 1570 to King Philip II of Spain. The success of this publication, illustrated with 53 captioned maps, led to numerous other editions in several languages.
