Important source of art relating to the prestigious Academie de France in Rome, founded in 1666 by Colbert. Due to the contrasts between the Papacy and the Revolution, Hugou de Bassville is sent to Rome as special commissioner on November 13, replacing the previous director, the painter François-Guillaume Ménageot. Hugou de Bassville will be assassinated in Rome Jan. 13, 1793. The next Director, painter Joseph-Benoît Suvée, will not be able to take office until 1801. 4to. 255x195 mm. Pp. 2, 2 blanks.
