SAKALAVA from the south, Madagascar. Eroded monoxyle carved wood, beautiful weathered material. Sculpture depicting a tall figure straddling his mount, a rare evocation of a horseman. The figure is in a hieratic pose, his long arms clasped along his slender body, his head with its curly hairstyle, his triangular face with features blurred by time, only the deep-set eyes remain, the powerful gaze seeming to probe the infinite. The sensitivity and presence of this masterful funerary work symbolize the passage to the other world. Height: 173cm Cracks and wear. Provenance: Joseph Christiaens Collection, Bruges, Belgium.
