ASIA: Very important embossed copper Buddha head from the ruins of a temple in the Gobi desert, destroyed by Chinese troops when they withdrew from Mongolia in the early 20th century. H. 54 - L. 36 cm. Provenance: According to the monastic archives of the great Gandan temple in Ulaanbaatar and its Khambo -Lama, (head of the Buddhist church in Mongolia, the Bogdo - Guegeen was still a child), the order for these 2 Buddhas was placed in 1797, but the Buddhas were actually designed in the 1st half of the 19th century - stored for a time in Amarbayasgalan and then erected in this Gobi temple destroyed by the Manchus during their military retreat.
