Bowl for the ifa oracle ajere ifa. Yoruba, Nigeria. H 18cm, ø 13cm. For holding palm nuts, carried by a standing drummer with a chin beard, hairstyle in parallel rows of plaits and a long, plaited back plait reaching down to the shoulders; he holds the tapered drum between his legs and beats it with both hands. At the beginning of a divination ceremony and on other occasions, the priest, Babalawo, taps the edge of a tray, opon ifa, with a pointing stick, iroke, to attract the attention of Orisha Orunmila. It is the deity who was present at creation and who knows the fate of all people. The priest then sprinkles flour over the tray, throws palm nuts on it and sees the oracle ahead through the combination of the traces left behind. Large crack on the side of the base, hairline crack on the right side of the head, otherwise intact; dark brown, partially shiny patina. Provenance: Ex Coll. Mareidi Stoll-Singer, Munich.
