MAHONGWE, Ogooué River, Gabon Wood, strips and copper wire The Mahongwe are part of the Kota group, living in the northeastern province of Gabon. This sculpture from Doctor Bartement's collection represents a reliquary figure known as "Boho-na-Bwété", literally meaning "face of the ancestor Bwete". It topped a basket containing the family's relics. It represents a highly stylized ogival-shaped face covered with stapled copper plates and strips, with cabochon-shaped eyes. Height: 52 cm. Slightly missing.
