STENDHAL (Henri BEYLE dit): La Chartreuse de Parme. By the author of Rouge et Noir. Paris, Ambroise Dupont, 1839. 2 volumes. 12 by 20.5 cm. (4)-402; (4)-445 pages. Contemporary midnight blue half calf, smooth spine decorated with romantic designs, with small white vellum corners. Binding in very good condition (spine very slightly faded). A few very light freckles on the first 3 leaves, one page artfully restored in volume 1, without missing, a small marginal stain on one page, not serious. Discreet stamp of a former owner on the title pages, and in one margin of each volume. Exemplary, free of any foxing, in period binding. Without the occasional catalog leaf. A very rare first edition of one of STENDHAL's two most famous novels, in rare condition.
