Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre was a writer with a passion for adventure. He had read Robinson Crusoe and traveled extensively, notably to the Île de France (now Mauritius). He was a friend of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, replaced Buffon at the Jardin des plantes and was elected to the Académie Française. Illustrated by the best artists of the time.
