The Goncourt brothers, Edmond de Goncourt and Jules de Goncourt, were two 19th-century French writers of the naturalist school. They collaborated on novels such as Germinie Lacerteux (1865), based on the double life of their servant, and Lorette et l'Art du XVIIIème siècle (1859-1875). They detested philanthropy and "bien-pensance", and loved Saint-Simon, Père Duchesne and the memorialists (Châteaubriant). The Goncourt brothers hail from Lorraine, from a village that bears their name. They are renowned for their love of antiques. Their best-known book is the Journal.
