Description

POLIGNAC - Anti-lucretius sive de deo et natura. Paris, Chez Coignard et Boudet, 1747; in-4, frontispiece depicting the author by Hyacinthe Rigaud and engraved by Daullé, XXXIV-450 pp. bound in full contemporary speckled calf, 5-rib spine, red morocco title-piece, red-painted edges. The 2 volumes. Very fine condition. Melchior de Polignac, French prelate, diplomat & poet of the late 17th and first half of the 18th centuries, negotiated the Treaty of Utrecht & was elected to the Académie française in Bossuet's place. This is a Latin edition of Polignac's main work. The vignettes and plates are by Eisen and engraved by Tardieu and Delafosse. Posthumous first edition of this hymn to Epicureanism, by Cardinal Melchior de Polignac, who offers a refutation based on the Christian and Cartesian model. The poem was often translated and saw multiple editions, and although the poem's philosophical pretensions don't carry far, it was justly appreciated as one of the best imitations of Latin poetry.
