Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, famous 18th-century French political thinker and moralist, became president of the Bordeaux parliament after studying philosophy. With a passion for science, he began by publishing scientific works on subjects such as echo, glands and gravity, before turning to philosophy and literature. Montesquieu traveled widely and even became a mason. He published L'Esprit des Lois and began contributing to the Encyclopédie. He ended his life blind and died in 1755.
