[ANTIPHONARY]. Fragment of antiphonary. [Southern France - Northern Italy, late 14th - 15th century]. Interesting large fragment of an antiphonary from the French-Italian area, illustrated with 56 large illuminated initials and numerous minor initials. The work opens with the Introitus and closes with the Ascension Responsory (Ascendens in altum... psalm 67). The chants are in consecution and follow the numbering: 1 ; 4, 6 (missing 5) with modern pencil numbering, 7 ; 166 (missing 65) with ancient numbering on the verso, 167-175 modern pencil numbering. The ancient numbering in Latin follows the following scheme: II-XC, XI to the recto C to the verso, I to the recto C to the verso, II; LVIII, XIX and C to the verso, LXXX to the recto C to the verso, LXXIX, LXXVIII LXXVII, in descending order to LXXI. Folio, vellum manuscript, (525 x 370mm). 173 (of 175?) leaves 3 later leaves added, 56 large illuminated initials, numerous minor initials, text in black and incipt in red, 7 lines of text, 4-line neugmatic notation (some woodworm paths at first and last leaves). Unbound, leaves loose without gatherings, without binding, contained within a 20th century morocco case. Provenance: on spine stated as 'Ligurian antiphonary'. (1)

[ANTIFONARIO] DE BRUGIS, Francesco (XV secolo). Antiphonarium. Venezia: Giunta, 1503 [WITH:] Psalterium nocturnum ac diurnum. Venice: Giunta, 1505. Two illustrated post-incunabula in contemporary bindings, among the largest books at the time, with illuminated initials engraved from drawings by the celebrated Venetian miniaturist and georgrapher Benedetto Bordone (1450-1531), Although missing a number of pages of text, these two works are extremely scarce on the market and are the most complete sets to have appeared to date (RBH). The binding is very similar to that of the exemplars in the Biblioteca Marciana, suggesting that they were produced on the instructions of the publisher himself. The Antiphonary and the Psalter, edited by Francesco de Brugis, constitute the first major editions of Roman antiphonaries and became a model for all subsequent editions. 2 works in 4 volumes, atlas folio, (555 x 370mm). First work: 2 volumes; vol. I: ff. 1-189 (lacking ff. 190-199); vol. II: ff. 200-228, 230-287 (lacking ff. 229, 287-325, [1] ); Second work: 2 volumes, vol. I: ff. 1 ; 176 (lacking ff. 177, 178 ); vol. II: ff. 179-189, 195 ; 317 (lacking ff. 190 ; 194; without ff. 287 ; 294, omitted as an editorial error as in the register and in OPAC SBN). 6 large engraved initials in the first work and 15 in the second by Benedetto Bordone, text printed in red and black on strong paper (some light marginal waterstaining, small chips to margins of the first and last few leaves). Contemporary bindings in red calf over wooden boards (two volumes with large losses to boards due to worming; chipped, ties lacking). (4)

French 13th century illuminated psalter leaf from the Rheims Cathedral or Signy Abbey. Blue, red, and black ink on vellum. With colored ink letters; one pen-flourish letter in red with blue designs. Geometric designs at the end of lines throughout as well as a design of a snake with its tongue flicking out. A few areas of marginalia along the front of the leaf. With a certificate of authenticity signed by W.H. Graton affixed to the verso. In a double-sided frame so both sides of the leaf may be viewed. Provenance: Graton and Graton, Islamorada, Florida, 1989; Private Minnesota Collection. Sight; height: 7 in x width: 5 1/4 in. Framed; height: 11 in x width: 9 1/4 in x depth: 1 in.
