Qalamdan pencil box with Holy Family design, Iran qâjâr, 19th century Oblong papier-mâché plumier with painted, gilded and lacquered decoration depicting, on the top, the Holy Family in a landscape, a kneeling young man and a peacock in the foreground, an angel among the trees in the background. On either side, a cartouche depicting a woman lying down in the presence of an elderly man and a child, framed by two portraits of women in oval medallions. Qalamdan pencil box decorated with European-influenced portraits, Iran qâjar, 19th century Oblong papier-mâché plumier with painted, gilded and lacquered decoration depicting, on the top, three portraits of full-length figures, two women and a man dressed in European style, with the inscription "Ya sadiq al-Wa'ed" (O man of his word!) in Arabic in gold letters at one end. On either side and at both ends, animated cartouches of figures, several with a Mother and Child, separated by medallion portraits.
