Damascus tile Siliceous paste with black painted decoration under turquoise glaze Levant, Damascus, 16th century 11.8 x 20.2 cm This Damascus tile features a black floral design on a turquoise background, with scrolls, flowers and half-palmettes, and a mandorla in the center. It is similar to the tiles that adorned the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. The restoration of this monument was commissioned by Soleymân the Magnificent in the mid-16th century, and the famous ceramist 'Abd-allâh of Tabriz was entrusted with the task.
