Henri MARTIN (1860-1943). Peasant and his wife, circa 1900. Black stone on laid paper. Study for the ceiling of the Salle des Commissions, Hôtel de Ville, Tours (commissioned in 1899). Dedicated in 1900 lower left "Affectueux souvenir / à Paul Louis / Henri Martin 00" and annotated lower right "Étude pour le plafond 'La Paix' Hôtel de Ville". 31 x 47.5 cm. Some loss, tears, restoration, small holes, loss and pitting. This painting will be included in the catalog raisonné currently being produced by Marie-Anne Destrebecq-Martin. A certificate of authenticity may be requested, at the purchaser's expense.
