Léon Carré, attr, Soldat im Hafen Depiction of a young soldier in parade uniform in front of a wall in the harbour, probably a motif from his native town of Granville in the Manche département in Normandy, finely glazed genre painting, oil on canvas, signed "LCarré" in ligature lower left and dated [18]94, uninterpreted inscription "AC 33" on painted stone to the right, minor craquelure, paint chipping, somewhat in need of restoration, framed, folded, dimensions approx. 32 x 25 cm. Artist information: actually Léon Georges Jean-Baptiste Carré, also Leon Carre, French painter, draughtsman, graphic artist. Painter, draughtsman, graphic artist, commercial artist, stamp designer and illustrator (1878 Granville/Manche to 1942 Algiers), representative of the École d'Alger, trained as a decorator at the École des beaux-arts in Rennes in Brittany, moved to Paris in 1896 to the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, here a pupil of Léon Bonnat and Luc-Olivier Merson, then freelance in Paris, 1904 and 1905 trips to Algiers, 1909-11 two-year scholarship for a stay at the Villa Abd-el-Tif in Algiers, 1911 study trip to Spain and enthusiasm for the depiction of bullfights, after the First World War mainly as a commercial artist. In 1927 he created decorative paintings for the passenger ship "Île de France", in 1926-32 he created illustrations for a 12-volume edition of "One Thousand and One Nights", from 1900 he exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français, from 1905 the Salon of the Société des Artistes Indépendants, 1907 the Salon of the Société nationale des beaux-arts and 1911 the Salon d'Automne, 1936 appointed Knight of the Legion of Honour, active in Paris and from ca. 1939 in Algiers, source: Thieme-Becker, Vollmer, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", AKL, Bénézit and Wikipedia.

Ludolf Verworner, attr, Mädchenakte im Wald sommerliche Szene mit nackt im Wald posierenden jungen Frauen, studienhaft-flott erfasst, gering pastose impressionistische Malerei unter Einbeziehung der Farbigkeit des Malgrundes, oil on canvas, inscribed "LV" on the lower right, stamped "Ludolf Verworner Florenz 318" on the reverse of the canvas and handwritten annotation "177" as well as indistinct annotations on the stretcher, beautifully framed in modern times, rebate dimensions approx. 55.5 x 60.5 cm. Artist's note: actually Ludolf Heinrich Verworner, Italian also Enrico Ludolf Verworner, German painter (1864 Leipzig to 1966). Painter (1864 Leipzig to 1927 Fiesole), studied from 1885 at the Dresden Academy under Leon Pohle, lived 1890-91 in Paris, 1898-1900 active in Switzerland, 1900 moved to Fiesole near Florence, source: Thieme-Becker, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", student lists of the Dresden Academy, Comanducci and Stefano de Rosa "Heinrich Ludolf Verworner, il colore del dubbio".

[ZIENKOWICZ (Léon)]. Collection of 10 lithographed and colored costume plates from Les Costumes du peuple polonais (G. Silbermann pour la librairie polonaise, Paris 1841). In-4 modern marbled bradel boards, blue marbled title page on spine. The original work published by the literary critic and political activist Leon Józef Zienkowicz (in opposition to the Russian government's ban on traditional costumes) featured a total of 39 color plates of costumes. Lightly browned paper, otherwise very good condition (Colas 3115.)

Journal des Chasseurs. Revue littéraire. Paris, Journal des Chasseurs, 1836-1864. 37 vol. in-8, 309 plates, 17 color plates, 2 maps, one folded (vol. 25). Red half-chagrin, spine ribbed (contemporary binding). Mottling on some volumes, foxing, small black mark on spine of volume 10. Ex-libris Olivier de Seguin. Head of the collection of the most important periodical devoted to hunting. Founder of the Revue, Léon Bertrand ran it until 1861. The periodicity is monthly, then bi-monthly. The best hunting writers of the day took part: Léon Bertrand, Joseph La Vallée, the Marquis de Foudras, d'Houdetot, Deyeux, Toussenel... The magazine ended in 1870. "Le Journal des Chasseurs remains the most important hunting magazine ever published in France, and has rightly been called Le Livre d'Or de la Vénérie française. Complete collections were already rare in 1885 when Souhart published his Bibliographie; they are much rarer today" (Thiébaud). Illustrated with lithographs, the Revue is a formidable iconographic source. Of particular note are the famous lithographs by Traviès and the 17 colored plates, which are rarely found. Thiébaud notes that copies with colored plates are extremely rare (Thiébaud, 523). A good copy, despite the noted defects.
