The treatise was highly praised by Ferdinando Galiani in his Catalogue of Subjects Belonging to Vesuvius, and translated into French and English. Also of particular interest are the two large copper-engraved plates: one depicts the two craters in section and the other a wide view of Vesuvius. Serao (1702-1783), protomedico of the Kingdom of Naples, was the first to give a rigorously scientific description of the eruptions of Vesuvius. Darley: "Serao was to first use the word lava, derived from the Latin labes for fall or slide. In an attempt to add a positive note, his account ended with some safety measure, suggesting that people build dykes and ditches or divert and divide the main flow of molten material as had proved effective at Etna." Coeval binding in marbled stock, title and friezes in gold on spine, marbled guard sheets, red boards. Pages XXIV, 399, 1 blank. 1 engraved and folded map depicting Naples and its environs, 5 engraved and folded plates at end of volume with views of Vesuvius. Heraldic ex libris topped with marquis crown pasted to the counterplate and verso of the guard sheet. Slight traces of use to binding, nice copy. First French edition. Della-Torre, librarian of the Bourbon Museum, scientist and volcanologist, observed the eruptions of Vesuvius in 1751 and 1754. In this work, published in Italian in 1755, he not only described the eruptions but the characteristics of the volcano, and sought to understand the mystery and physical laws of the earth. To complete his exposition he referred to what had been written on the subject since Antiquity. This French edition is expanded: it also contains the "Dissertation critique" by Father Gaetan d'Amato (p. 295 - 370) and, at the end, the interesting additions by Della Torre himself.
