Born in Bogotá into a wealthy family, he devoted himself to painting after the death of his father. After studying in Paris, he won prestigious prizes at the Salons for his Impressionist works. Back in Colombia, Santa María's break with the academic tradition led to controversy. Nevertheless, he became a professor at the Bogotá Academy of Fine Arts and was later appointed director. Despite his artistic recognition, Santa María faced criticism and controversy in Colombia, prompting him to resign his position and return to Europe. He then lived between Brussels, Paris and other European cities, continuing to paint and exhibit his work until the end of his life. His artistic legacy comprises three distinct periods, ranging from Impressionism to thicker, more vibrant techniques. He had a profound influence on modern art in Colombia and left a lasting legacy in his country's painting history.
