A Danish parcel gilt silver 'hovedvandsaeg' or marriage box. Paul Hansen I (active 1785-1830), Tønder, c.1827. Of traditional form with twin handles and two compartments, the vase-shaped body with enamelled lozenge to one side and vacant mount for lozenge to the other, the foliate handles with red paste surmounts in collet settings and the hinged cover with paste-set finial, the base prick dot engraved with the date 1827 and the initials JJ, the oval balsam compartment at foot with hinged cover, 19.3cm high, gross weight approx. 1.9ozt
