[ORIGINAL EDITION] Antony THOURET - Toussaint, le mulâtre By Alphonse Levavasseur, Paris, 1834 - First edition of this somewhat delirious and curious novel. Beautiful uniform period bindings, in half-brown basane, decorated bindings and gilt fillets, title in gilt lettering, marbled edges, slight rubbing but not serious, in good condition. Fairly fresh inside, with scattered foxing that is not very pronounced. Complete with two frontispieces on Chine by Grandville (here spelled Granville), this being the second book illustrated by him. Antony Thouret (1807-1871), a surprising character to say the least, friend of Victor Hugo and close to his family too, played a political role as prefect and deputy, republican and opponent of the July monarchy in particular. He left an interesting mark on the political landscape of the time, thanks to his slightly eccentric personality and obesity, which provoked much mockery and caricature. "Convulsive literature, moral and physical monstrosities, a hellish world. The author announces in his preface, dated from the Saint-Waast prison in Douai, that this book is the product of a prisoner's insomnia, and that many tears have fallen on its pages. This consideration shuts critics' mouths, and they must forgive the poor prisoner's feverish delirium" (Cherbulier). "Toussaint le Mulâtre is a book written under lock and key, and which has crossed the dark wickets and thick gates to come to us; it is the work of Antony Thouret who, detained for more than three years and sentenced to more than 5o ooo fr. in fines, far from being downcast by the rigor of these sentences, has given us in two volumes the fruit of his vigils and insomnia." (Girault de Saint-Fargeau). The novel is dated, at the end, to Saint-Waast prison (insomnia of March 30, 1834). In-8, 318pp + table and errata, 361pp + table and errata.
