Incroyable and Merveilleuse are both fashionable and popular figures created in reaction to the violence of the Terror, which came to an end in July 1794 with the death of Robespierre. Dressed in the style of the 1790s and the Directoire period, not unlike the aristocratic style of the Ancien Régime, they symbolize the evils and frivolity of a liberated, anti-revolutionary bourgeois youth. Derived from these figures, they are often personified and caricatured. Workshops in Dieppe, such as the later Louis Raymond Brunel (1818-1882), depict historical or everyday subjects in ivory.
