RARE CONSOLE À L'ÉTRUSQUE PAR GEORGES JACOB (1739-1814)

in mahogany veneer and carved and gilded wood; the belt opens into a large drawer in blond oak, revealing three compartments, one of which has small storage compartments and a flap. The front jambs feature carved and gilded wood busts of sphinxes, their chests protruding and their wings back, mounted in a sheath and ending in bare feet. Cloverleaf keyhole, three-bolt lock, chased and gilded bronze ornamentation. Stamped by G. Jacob (stamp used from 1765 to 1796) and Jurande. Blue turquoise marble top. France, late 18th century. Height : 86 cm - Width : 129 cm - Depth : 59 cm (Very good general condition, restorations, small accidents and missing pieces) In the late 1780s, Georges Jacob produced "Etruscan-style" furniture inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity, mostly designed by the painter Jacques-Louis David and featured in several of his paintings. In fact, it was the friendship between the two artists and David's powerful protection that enabled Jacob to get through the revolutionary period without worrying too much about his relations with the princes of the royal household and various members of the aristocracy.
