Merry-Joseph BLONDEL (1781-1853) Allegorical female figure with a crown of ears of wheat (Ceres?) Pencil on blue paper, signed and annotated "Etude pour le plafond de la salle du mobiler XIXe au Louvre" lower right H_22 cm - W_18.5 cm (unframed, in a mount) Note: A student of Jean-Baptiste Regnault, he won the Prix de Rome in 1803 with a composition depicting "Aeneas carrying his father Anchises", and spent three years at the Villa Médicis in Rome. On his return to Paris, he embarked on a career as a decorator, winning numerous state commissions. In 1827 and 1828, he was commissioned to carry out major works at the Palais du Louvre, notably in the Galerie d'Apollon, the Grand Staircase, the Salle Henri II, and the former rooms of the Conseil d'État.

Set of 6 war crosses 1914-18. - Cross 1914-1917, bronze, complete with ribbon bearing a gilded brass crescent, symbol of a Poilu of the Army of Africa, and 3 vermeil stars for 3 commendations to the order of the corps. - Cross 1914-1918, bronze, complete with ribbon and enamelled badge of a veterans' society "1914 AC 1918". - 1914-1917 cross, bronze, complete with ribbon bearing a bronze palm for a commendation to the order of the army, a bronze star for a commendation to the order of the regiment, a vermeil star for a commendation to the order of the army corps and a copper brooch featuring a sprig of lily of the valley with a "BOIS LE PRETRE" banner. - Cross 1914-1917, bronze, complete with ribbon bearing a skull and crossbones in stamped brass plate and a bronze star for a citation in the order of the regiment. - 1914-1917 cross, bronze, complete with ribbon bearing a silver-plated copper brooch featuring a sprig of lily of the valley with "ARMISTICE" banner. - 1914-1918 cross, bronze, complete with ribbon bearing a "St MIHIEL" clasp and a bronze star for a citation to the order of the regiment. (Patina of use, some ribbons worn, overall in fairly good condition).
