AN OLD AND RUSTIC EBONY WOOD NETSUKE OF A TOAD AN OLD AND RUSTIC EBONY WOOD NETSUKE OF A TOAD Unsigned Japan, 18 th century, Edo period (1615-1868) A bulky and somewhat stylized carving of a toad sitting on its stomach, its legs tucked beneath its rotund body as the amphibian settles into its relaxed state. The warty skin of the toad boldly textured giving the piece a uniquely rustic appearance; the rim of the eyes inlaid in gilt brass. Generously excavated asymmetrical himotoshi to the underside. LENGTH 5.2 cm Condition: Good condition with typical wear, a repaired section to the left leg.

A WOOD NETSUKE OF GAMA SENNIN WITH TOAD, EDO PERIOD A WOOD NETSUKE OF GAMA SENNIN WITH TOAD, EDO PERIOD Japan, 18 th to 19 th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Boldy carved, depicting the immortal standing on one leg, the other slightly raised, his left arm lifted, supporting his head, the other carrying his gnarled staff. Gama Sennin dressed in his characteristic leaf cloak, carrying an oversized toad on his shoulders. The immortal with an amused expression, his mouth open in a big smile. Asymmetrical himotoshi to the back. Beautifully worn and fine patina. HEIGHT 9.2 cm Condition: Shows traces of age and wear as well as smaller chips and material loss to the staff. Provenance: Canadian private collection.
