17th century Flemish school, follower of Peter Paul Rubens The Conversion of Saint Bavo Oil on oak panel, parquet finish 83 x 56 cm Provenance : F. Kleinberger Collection, Paris, 1927; Trotti and Co, Paris, 1928 (Rubens); Acquired March 13, 1935 by Jacques Guerlain from Jules Feral (Purchase invoice: Rubens, Esquisse pour le tableau de the Cathedral of Ghent); Collection Jacques Guerlain ; Always in the family. Bibliography: H. Vlieghe, Saints I, London and New York, 1972, cited under no. 72a, reproduced fig. 124 (copy after Rubens, location unknown). In a letter to Monsieur Jacques Guerlain in 1953, Ludwig Burchard states that our painting is a copy of a sketch by Rubens (the document can be given to the buyer). Our painting can be compared with the same composition attributed to Abraham Van Diepenbeeck in the RKD (Panel, 68.5 x 46 cm; RKD, Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie permalien n°252590 , panel, 68.5 x 46 cm)
