Joseph Gengenbach, known as "CANABAS", was a cabinetmaker who received his master's degree in 1766. Canabas is one of the few cabinetmakers to use mahogany almost exclusively. Indeed, the use of mahogany in cabinetmaking became widespread in France from the 1760s, notably in workshops such as that of Jean-François Oeben.
