Description

Nicolas PETIT 1732-1791) and Jean SOLTZER (Master June 17, 1778, died 1783) COMMODE In mahogany and mahogany veneer, opening with five drawers, on fluted tapered legs. Beautiful ormolu ornamentation. Veined white marble top. Double stamp. Louis XVI period. Height 89 ; Width 126 ; Depth 56 cm. Restorations. Note. This double stamp is rare enough to merit a mention, as Nicolas Petit is no longer a household name, securing major commissions throughout his career, from the Transition to the Louis XVI style. His furniture can be found in major museum collections. Jean Soltzer's stamp is rarer, this cabinetmaker had only a short career. His widow kept his workshop until the French Revolution. It is therefore likely that Nicolas Petit intervened here at his colleague's request or that Jean Soltzer's widow had a commission to fulfill following her husband's death.
